David Wayne and friends - 1986

Hello (webmaster),

Back in the early to mid 1980's, not long before the release of Metal Church's debut album I became friends with members of the band, in particular Craig Wells & Dave Wayne. I was (& still am) a biker & an artist born in Aberdeen WA, living in Bellingham, and I use to correspond with the guys & cover the envelopes with my art. We had something in common other than Aberdeen, as I was a vocalist in a thrash metal garage band known as "Loser" at that time.

Back around the winter/spring of 1985 I came down for the weekend to stay with Dave at his apartment in Kent. My fondest memories were of Dave opening his home to me & making me feel like an honored guest, and of sitting in Craig's grandma's garage as Metal Church practiced for an upcoming gig opening for Raven at the Moore Theater in Seattle (a gig that Dave was sure to put me on the guest list for).

Another memory I treasure was Metal Church playing for me an as-of-then-untitled (& without lyrics) song that would become known as "Watch the Children Pray." I remember Dave asking me, "You don't think it sounds too wimpy do you?" & I enthusiastically said, "No way!" (remember, at this time some die hard rabid metal heads had jumped all over Metallica for "Fade to Black").

Unfortunately over the years I lost touch with the Church, and especially missed The Rev' & Craig. I do however have my memories, and photos I took during that practice session in Kent.

With this memorial weekend I decided to finally go public with these photos to honor Dave's memory, first placing them in an album on my myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/bham_greaser) and I would like to share them on your website. Could you tell me where to email them?

I just want to close by saying "thank you" to Kurdt Vanderhoof, Kirk Arrington, & Duke Erickson & especially Craig Wells & the 'Reverend' Dave Wayne, for befriending this greasy ol' outlaw biker and giving me those great memories. I hope Dave, that your rocking the stars in heaven.

Take care - Vaya con Dios,

(submitted May 30,2007)     Those were great times indeed. Its funny, but after I wrote you I remembered the time I was on KOMO-TV in Seattle with Dave & the boys. It was the show "Town Meeting," with the debate focused on banning rock-metal concerts, due to violence. Throughout the show, Dave spoke, giving great arguments in support of metal, and there I was sitting right behind him.

I think the best moment wasn't caught on camera, it was outside while waiting to get in. I had traveled down with a friend who did not believe I knew Metal Church, even said so to my face! Well, not even two minutes after he said that, Craig - Kirk - & Kurdt walked up, saw me, and Craig said, "Hey, there's someone we know." I couldn't had planned it better!

Then Dave & Duke came up, with Dave calling me out by name -- funny, being on the TV show was the last time I ever saw the guys in person.

Anyhow, thanks again for keeping the memory alive.

Take care -- :: BIG T ::
